Gee Haw Whammy Diddle PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bernie DeKoven
Wednesday, 02 May 2007
It's a Gee-Haw-Whammy-Diddle" is what it is (a.k.a. Ouija Windmill and Hooey Stick). A folk toy (and sometimes musical instrument) that is easy enough to make and fun enough to play with and, for those who are in the know, an opportunity to cause significant mystification amongst the uninitiated. Say "hooey" and behold, the propeller spins to the left. Say "hooey" again, and again behold, now it spins to the right. Go ahead, speak to it. Cajole, nay, even beg it. See if you, too, can make it change direction.

Philadex PDF Print E-mail

PhiladexI found the following description of Pilla-Dex in the "Evolutionary History of Table Tennis" collection housed virtually in the vast depository of the Table Tennis Museum:"In 1896 this game, and an American counterpart Pillow-Dex, used a cord to divide the length of the table, the players then using their hands to bat a balloon to and fro. Other variants of Tennis motif games were card games and Tiddledy Winks played on a miniature felt court with a small net." I found further, but not much more informative description of the game in the Jaeger Tennis Heritage Collection.

For the junkyard sport, as I sometimes view myself, this is all positively inspirational.

Skee-Ball Revisited PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bernie DeKoven
Wednesday, 02 May 2007
Skee-Ball, in case you need to be reminded, is described most poignantly by Paul Lukas on his Inconspicuous Consumption website, as:
"...that coin-operated game where you roll a series of nine balls, one at a time, up a gently inclined lane that has a hump at the far end. The ball sort of launches off of the hump and then lands in one of several holes -- the farther away the hole is, the more points that hole is worth. It's a swell game, but the key moment for me is when I drop my coin in the slot, which releases the nine balls down a ramp -- the balls are all released at once and proceed down the ramp in unison, one after the other, so they all come to a near-simultaneous stop when the bottom ball reaches the base of the ramp, which produces a spectacularly satisfying Click! sound that resonates throughout the room. The appeal of the click (which is actually comprised of eight separate and distinct mini-clicks, which are separated by a nanosecond or so as each ball collides with the one in front of it) is hard to describe, but it's one of those exquisitely perfect noises that's exciting and comforting all at once."

Wheelchair Skateboarding PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bernie DeKoven

Wheelchair skateboarding is the very kind of sport activity that demonstrates the heart and soul of the "junkyard" approach to sports. Like all skateboarding, the world is a skatepark. Sure, it's always neat to find a dedicated skatepark with artfully constructed ramps and stuff. But the heart of skateboarding can be found on curbs and stair railings and in empty swimming pools.

Halfrubber PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bernie DeKoven
Wednesday, 02 May 2007
Certainly you remember Halfball, the 50's and 60's Philadelphia and Boston stickball-like, baseball-related game played with a broomstick and half a hollow-rubber ball. And certainly you've seen the official halfball equipment where, for only $30, you get the "41 inch long by 1.25 inch diameter halfball bat. Handcrafted and turned by a batmaker in Maine, USA to capture the feel of cherished memories, branded with the Halfball logo (and) three bonus halfballs are included with every order." Yes, yes, I admit, there's a little irony here, halfball being a Junkyard Sport par excellence, created, out of necessity, when one's Pimpleball split - and now we have people who are marketing official, pre-made halfballs. But my question to you is have you seen Halfrubber, the beach game?
