Mojo Kickball is, as they say, not kickball.
Just like kickball is not baseball. It's kickball grown up. Kind of. It's for people who are not of traditional kickball age, but who are young enough in spirit to want to play, and mature enough in spirit to want to play a game that's primarily for fun, a game everyone can play, in sum, a game very much in the tradition of Junkyard Sports.
Like the more grown-up kinds of sports, the rules area bit complex. What, after all, would you expect from a not-kickball game where you use 6 kickballs. It's a deep enough game to have led to the development of a host of strategies. It's complex enough for me not to even consider trying to describe it in detail. I do have, thanks to the "creator" a description of the game, as follows: Like kickball ... - you kick the ball and run the bases
- youʼre safe on base
- foul lines the same
But then everything changes ... - 6 balls in play
- The game is timed, broken into 4 quarters. (2 Kicking, 2 Fielding)
- Pitcher is on the Kicking Team
- You score at 3rd Base. Not Home.
So letʼs say youʼre Kicking ... As you run, the Fielders try to get you out. They can get you out in 3 ways. - Catching a fly-ball
- Tagging you with the ball
- Throwing the ball at you and hitting you
And now youʼre Running ... As you run, 3 people on your team defend you. They are the Chasers. They can block a ball thrown at you. Or if the Fielder gets too close, they can tag them (with their hand). The Fielder would then lose the ball. There are 3 Chasers - The Yellow Chaser goes ANYWHERE
- The Purple Chaser goes everywhere but inside the baselines
- The Pitcher-Chaser can only go within the bunt-line
But wait! Thereʼs more! If the Fielder throws the ball at you and you catch it, youʼre NOT out! Keep running and use the ball to defend yourself against other thrown balls. When you score, you go back to kick. But if you get OUT, you go to the Chaser Line and wait to be Chaser. IMPORTANT: Getting OUT means you MUST wait in the Chaser Line until you become a Chaser! And you canʼt go back to kick until youʼve been the Chaser, even itʼs just for a teeny tiny amount of time. So now youʼre a Chaser ... You got out. You waited in the Chaser Line. You got one of the Chaser belts handed to you. Youʼre now a Chaser. Congratulations! Youʼre duties as Chaser are : - Protect your Runner(s)!
- Get dead balls off the field and back into your teamʼs possession so they may be kicked again.
- Cause havoc with the (evil) Fielding teamʼs game-plan. They fear the awful tag/touch of the alert Chaser so they will run away from you.
A note about the Purple Chaser If there are no live balls, the refs will say Purple Chaser dismissed! The Purple Chaser then just drops off the belt at the Chaser Line and goes back to kick. Timeʼs up! Now youʼre Fielding ... Fielders field balls that are kicked. The ball goes through 3 stages (always in this order). - Once kicked, the ball is In Play
- Once the ball is touched by a Fielder, the ball is Live
- Once the ball touches the ground again, it will be called Dead
The other thing that can make the ball Dead is if a Chaser touches you while youʼre holding a Live ball.
